Stamped concrete walkway in Pittsburgh

A stamped concrete walkway is a small job that changes how a house looks from the street. Because people walk on it in all weather, the pattern matters less than the grip, the slope and how it meets your steps.

Designing a walkway

A walkway should feel easy to use as well as look good. These details make the biggest difference.

  • At least 4 feet wide, so that two people can pass
  • A gentle curve where the lot allows it
  • A pattern that matches the house, not a loud contrast
  • A slope that sheds water away from the foundation
  • A border that frames the walk against the lawn
  • A landing at the steps, so that nobody has to step down blind

Keeping a walkway safe in winter

Smooth sealed concrete can get slick on a frosty morning. On a walkway, we choose a pattern with some texture and mix a grit into the sealer. Slate textures work well, while very smooth stamp mats are best left for covered areas. Skip rock salt, as it can damage the surface and the color. Sand gives you grip without the harm.

Sidewalks at the street are different, since they're usually set by your town. Many Pittsburgh-area municipalities want plain concrete there, so stamped work normally stops at your property line.

Tying it all together

A walkway looks best when it matches the rest of the house. If you're also redoing the porch or steps, have them stamped in the same pattern and color, as it's hard to match them later. See stamped concrete steps and porches. If your walk is level but tired, a stamped overlay may save you from a full tear-out.

How the job goes

  1. Lay it out

We mark the route with paint or a hose.

  2. Dig and base

Stone goes in and is compacted.

  3. Form

Curves are formed and set to grade.

  4. Pour and stamp

The walk is poured, colored and stamped.

  5. Seal

Sealer goes on with a non-slip grit.

Common questions

How long before you can walk on concrete sidewalk?

Usually after a day or two. Wait about a week before you put anything heavy on it.

Do you need gravel for concrete?

For a walkway, yes. About 4 inches of compacted stone keeps it level through frost.

Does concrete sidewalk need rebar?

Not always, but short pins at steps and walls help stop a walk from drifting apart.
