Stamped concrete pool deck in Pittsburgh

A stamped concrete pool deck has to do three things that a patio doesn't: stay comfortable on bare feet, keep its grip when wet and stand up to pool water. So the pattern, the color and the sealer all get chosen differently here.

Choosing a surface for bare feet

A deck that looks great in a sample can feel wrong on a hot day. These are the things we think about for a pool deck.

  • Light colors stay much cooler than dark ones
  • Fine textures are kinder to feet than deep grout lines
  • A rough pattern grips better, but it is harder to clean
  • A grit in the sealer adds grip without too much roughness
  • A broad slope takes splash water away from the pool

Around the pool edge

The joint between the deck and the pool coping needs to be flexible, so that one can move without damaging the other. Drainage matters too, since water on a deck should run away from the pool wall. A good slope, or a slot drain on a flat site, keeps both the pool and the slab happier. Sealers also have to handle pool water, so splash-out from a salt or chlorine pool should be rinsed off now and then.

If your pool is older, check how the coping and the deck meet before you start. Many old decks lift or sink at that joint, and it's best to plan for that up front.

Renewing an old pool deck

If your deck is level and sound but stained or worn, you may not need to remove it. A stamped concrete overlay adds a new surface with less mess around the pool. On a stamped deck that's faded, stamped concrete repair may bring the color back.
