Colored concrete in Pittsburgh

Colored concrete has pigment mixed all the way through the slab, so a chip shows the same color as the surface. It's a simple way to warm up a patio or walkway, and it costs much less than stamping.

Ways to color concrete

There are three main ways to add color, and each one suits a different job.

  • Integral color: pigment in the mix, for even color all through
  • Color hardener: powder cast on top, for strong color and a tough surface
  • Stain or dye: added after the slab has cured, for mottled tones

What to expect from the color

Colored concrete is never as even as paint. The final shade depends on the cement, the weather, the amount of water and how long the slab cures. Sample chips are a guide and not a promise. Two truckloads of the same mix can dry a little differently, which is why we try to place one job from a single batch plan and keep the water the same.

Colors also dry lighter than they look when wet. A dark color can show white efflorescence in its first year, which usually clears up with time and a mild cleaner. Light earth tones hide it better.

Colored or stamped?

If you like the color but not the pattern, a plain colored slab with a neat broom finish is a smart choice. It needs less upkeep than stamped concrete, and it costs less. If you want a stronger look, see our stamped concrete patio page, or use a color on an old slab with concrete staining.

How much does a yard of concrete weigh wet?

About 4,000 pounds, which is why a small colored batch is still a truck delivery.
